Rome Termini Railway Station - 1.4MW Hot Water Absorption Chiller
Project Overview:
Location: Rome, Italy
Customer: Railway Station
Equipment Selection: 1 unit of 1.4MW Hot Water Absorption Chiller
Main Feature: Cooling for Railway Station
Project Description: This project involves the installation of a 1.4MW hot water absorption chiller to provide cooling for a major railway station in Rome, Italy. The absorption chiller is powered by waste heat from a combined heat and power (CHP) system, ensuring efficient energy usage for the cooling needs of the station.
Railway stations, especially large ones, require significant cooling to maintain comfortable temperatures for passengers and staff. In this case, the hot water absorption chiller will meet the station's cooling demand while also improving the overall energy efficiency by utilizing waste heat instead of relying solely on conventional electricity-driven cooling systems. This reduces operating costs and the environmental impact associated with the cooling process.
The project contributes to sustainability goals by optimizing the use of energy resources, making it a significant step towards greener infrastructure for Italy's railway network.
Introduction
Project Overview:
Location: Rome Termini Railway Station, Rome, Italy
Customer: Rome Termini Railway Station
Equipment Selection: 1 unit of 1.4MW Hot Water Absorption Chiller
Heat Source: Heat exchange from steam through a water tank
Main Feature: Provide cooling for air conditioning at the railway station
Operation Start Date: 2019
Project Description: Rome Termini railway station, a key transportation hub with over 80 years of history, is one of the largest and most important railway stations in Italy, serving as a gateway for domestic and international travel. To meet the station's cooling demands, a 1.4MW hot water absorption chiller was installed in 2019, providing air conditioning throughout the station.
The absorption chiller utilizes a heat source derived from steam, which is transferred to a water tank that exchanges the heat. This system is particularly efficient as it leverages waste heat instead of relying solely on electrical power, helping to reduce energy consumption and operational costs while providing reliable cooling for the large and busy station.
The system ensures optimal comfort for passengers and staff in the station’s extensive passenger areas, including waiting rooms, platforms, and commercial spaces, particularly during the summer months. Additionally, by using steam heat as an energy source, the project aligns with sustainability goals by maximizing energy efficiency and reducing the environmental impact of cooling operations.
